QUILTED SWEATER/JACKET:
Part of the enjoyment that one takes in a quilt is absorbing all the different factors that go into its essence:
- choice of design
- fabrics
- quilting pattern
- colors
- workmanship
- practical warmth and
- over-all beauty
Quilts can tell stories or represent historical events, chapters in our history and the history of our society. Some of that is being diminished by the glut of “cheap” imported quilts that can be seen in every catalog and department store – certainly not a unique and personal product.
This
sweater/jacket is an attempt to capture that essence, combine it with
another texture (wool) and put it on our bodies. My designs are either
inspired by traditional patterns such as the Log Cabin, Flying Geese or
Diamond in the Square; or they can be influenced by a specific piece of
fabric which lends itself towards a specific pattern. Time is spent putting
one fabric with another until the right effect is found. Each jacket takes
between 10 and 15 hours of work. The front and back are pieced and quilted
like a vest. Hand-knitted ribbings and hand-loomed sleeves are then attached
and the whole body is then completely lined in a complementary fabric.
There are three different weights of yarn used - "Lamb's Pride",
a
wool/mohair blend; "Superwash", a lighter-weight wool; and "Cotton
Fleece", a cotton/wool blend - all from Brown
Sheep Company
Many patterns and color choices are available, and more are being developed
each year. Some have a real “country” feel while others are
more contemporary and sophisticated. I like each one to be different from
the others – hence each one is a unique creation.
Dry cleaning is advised.
